News of the Week (4/26/2021-5/2/2021)

Miscellaneous

How are you doing this week?

I would like to introduce the news that interested me personally this week.

COVID-19 News

As vaccinations are progressing, COVID-19 infections are steadily declining in the U.S. On April 28, New York Governor Cuomo announced that he will remove restrictions on restaurant opening hours in the state from May.

As a result of this announcement, it was decided to remove the business hours regulations previously set until midnight from May 17 for outdoor and May 31 for indoors.

On April 27, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) also announced that people don’t have to wear a mask outdoors if two weeks have passed after they receive all the necessary vaccinations.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced at a press conference on April 29, 2021 that New York City is targeting the full resumption of economic activities by July 1, 2021.

On the other hand, New York Governor Cuomo said at a different news conference that it could be earlier than July 1 if all necessary measures are taken, so it seems that fully reopened New York City is coming within the next few months anyway.

Even after the effects of the COVID-19 are weaken, there are many companies that continue to adopt remote work, etc., and I am optimistic that the future life and work environment will be more convenient and balanced than the life before the COVID-19.

NYPD Cancels Use of Robot Dogs After Public Backlash

The NYPD had planned to use Boston Dynamics’ robotic dog until August 2021 when the lease is due, but it announced that they would stop its use after a backlash from residents and politicians.

Since October 2020, the robotic dogs have been used in several sites and hostage situations, and there have been calls for privacy concerns.

I would like you to check the actual photos on Google by yourself due to copyright, but certainly it has movements and appearances that are a little difficult to approach.

I think that many such robots will be deployed in the near future, but it makes us feel comfortable if they make a slightly more friendly appearances and movements.

iPhone Unlocking Is Supported When Wearing a Mask

iOS 14.5 launched on April 27, and this update includes the feature that allows you to unlock your iPhone without face recognition when connecting to the Apple Watch.

Until now, if you wear a mask, you will not be able to unlock it with the Face ID of the iPhone, but with this update, if you use the Apple Watch together, you will be able to unlock it even when wearing a mask.

I have an Apple Watch, but I don’t usually wear it, so I may not benefit much from this feature. Of course, it’s good news for those who usually use the Apple Watch!

Metropolitan Rooftop Exhibit Begins

The 9th Metropolitan Museum of Art’s rooftop exhibition, “The Roof Garden Community,” began on April 16 and is open until October 31.

This time, “As Long as the Sun Lasts” by Philadelphia-based artist, Alex Da Corte is on the exhibition. It’s a 20ft piece starring Sesame Street character Big Bird, and it’s moving!

I am excited of visiting the museum to see the exhibition in the near future, so if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t miss this opportunity!

Food Report: Wokuni

For the first time in the long time, I went to a fantastic Japanese restaurant “Wokuni” near Grand Central Station.

As always, I ordered “Barachirashi” on the picture above. I think I’ve been to “Wokuni” dozens of times already, but I always ask for “Barachirashi”.

As you can see in the photo, it is very fresh and very delicious, and the quality and quantity are perfect!

Wokuni is listed in the Michelin Guide, so if you haven’t been there yet, please give it a try!
