News of the Week (4/19/2021-4/25/2021)

Miscellaneous

How are you doing this week?

This week, I would like to introduce the following news that interests me personally.

Deregulation of Travelers

Travel restrictions in New York State have been eased. New York state had imposed a COVID-19 test and voluntary quarantines after entering the state for travelers coming from abroad and other states, but these obligations were basically removed effective on April 10, 2021 if a certain conditions are met. However, travelers entering New York state are still required to submit a travel health form, and international travelers are still required to take a COVID-19 test before entering the country. Most of New Yorkers are getting vaccinations already, and some people don’t wear masks these days. I can only hope things don’t get worse again.

Capital Gains Tax Increase?

President Biden plans to propose a capital gains tax increase to Congress. The current capital gains tax rate is 20%, but it seems that this could be up to 43.4% at highest. It is still in the proposal stage, so we don’t know what will actually happen in the future, but it seems to affect the securities market and other related markets.

Cryptocurrency Diem (Formerly Know As Libra)

The Facebook-led cryptocurrency Diem (formerly know as Libra), which was announced in 2019 and is awaiting to be introduced in public, will finally be in test operation within 2021. Although the cryptocurrency market has been turbulent recently, Diem’s entry into the market is likely to be a major event. I plan to purchase immediately after it enters the market, so I can’t keep an eye on it in the future.

Evolution of Self Cash Registers

Amazon has announced that it plans to install a scanner that makes the customers to pay by hand at its subsidiary grocery store, Whole Foods Market. In order to make their payment by a hand, customers need to link their fingerprints with credit and debit card information in advance. I am glad that it will become a convenient world more and more, but there are concerns about the handling of personal information.

Google Domain Expired?

It seems that the domain of Google has expired, and the ownership of domain has passed to a unrelated individual for only about $6. The Google domain which expired is “Google.com.ar” in Argentina, and access to Google seems to have been cut off and it seems to have become a disturbance among the Argentine people. However, now the ownership of the domain has returned to Google again, and things seem to have subsided quickly. Google is essential to my life almost every day, so I will be really in trouble if something like this happens.
