How did you do this week?
This week, the temperature in New York recorded above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and it feels as if the summer season has arrived already, so I went to the beer garden with my friends on this weekend and enjoyed a variety of beers!
Well, I would like to introduce the news that I was personally interested in this week.
Naomi Osaka’s Withdrawal from French Open
On May 31, Naomi Osaka, the second-ranked tennis player in the women’s world rankings, announced her withdrawal from the French Open, one of the Grand Slams.
After her first match win, some people were in uproar since Naomi denied to have a press conference. Due to this incident, she was fined $15,000, and Grand Slam organizers jointly made a statement that if she were to continue to deny the press conference, she would face higher fines and suspensions for future Grand Slams, but as a result, she decided to withdraw from the tournament by herself.
According to Naomi’s Twitter account, she has been struggling with depression symptoms for a long time since the 2018 U.S. Open, when she won her first Grand Slam title. She also expressed that she is not a natural public speaker in front of the media, which exacerbates her symptoms, so she decided not to attend a press conference at the French Open in order not to worsen her symptoms and ultimately decided to withdraw from the French Open.
In Japan, understanding of mental health is still poor and it is easy to be neglected, but I think it is a very courageous action that a top athlete like Naomi has made her health conditions public.
At 23 years old, Naomi still has a great potential, so I hope as one of her fans that she’ll take a rest for a while and take care of her well, and eventually see her come back healthy and cheerful.
Ring of Fire
On June 10, a sun eclipse called Ring of Fire can be observed in some areas.
Unfortunately, you can’t observe the complete Ring of Fire in Manhattan, but it seems that you can see a partial eclipse which starts at 5:24am on the day and peaks at 5:32am.
If you are interested in astronomical observation, let’s enjoy a valuable astronomical show!
Please be careful not to look directly at the sun.
The Age of Programming in Spoken Language Has Arrived
On May 25, Microsoft announced a feature that allows people to program in the language they speak, using Artificial Intelligence.
According to the announcement, the AI understands the content of the spoken language and converts it into programming code, so it is not necessary for a human to understand and enter code by himself.
First of all, the technology will be available in North America during this June through Power Apps, an app development software for business use.
Programming requires a hard works to learn like a foreign language, but using this technology, it seems that it is possible to achieve a lower barrier to programming and to solve the shortage of human resources in the IT field.
Increased Specific Protein Extended Mouse Lifespan by 23%
On May 28, a research group at Bar-Ilan University in Israel published in Nature that they succeeded in extending the life expectancy of mice by as long as 23 percent by increasing the production of specific protein (SIRT6), which decreases with age.
According to experiments, increasing the production of the protein not only increased the average life expectancy, but also kept the cholesterol low, created a body that was less likely to become cancerous, and increased physical abilities.
At present, no mean has been found to increase the protein in the human body, but the research group mentioned that it is possible to develop a drug to increase the protein in the next few years, and this drug may be used to prevent aging in the future.
Longevity is one of the greatest dreams of humanity in science, but the day might be coming much sooner than what we expects.
Food Report: Ayada
This week, I went to Ayada, a Thai restaurant in Chelsea Market.
Michelin has featured this restaurant from 2012 to 2019, but I stopped by here as my friend just took me without knowing such a thing.
I ordered “Pad Thai” and “Seafood Tom Yum Soup” this time.
I’ve eaten Thai foods a few times, and to be honest, Pad Thai was delicious but within my expectations.
However, the Seafood Tom Yum Soup was many times more delicious than what I expected, and I just wanted to eat more after finishing the soup.
By the way, Tom Yum Kung is a popular dish in Japan, and Tom means to boil, Yum means to mix, and Kung means shrimp.
The restaurant was very popular and busy, but I would like to go there again to enjoy the soup.
Ayada 75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011 Mon-Thu, 11:00 AM - 9:30 PM Fri-Sat, 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM Sunday, CLOSED
Postscript
This week, I was not feeling well on weekdays, and I could only post one article.
However, it was good that I was able to have enough time for the online English and CFP exam studies.
I was also happy to see my friends I hadn’t seen for a while because of Corona on Memorial Day, to see Manhattanhenge which I only have a few chances a year, and to go to a beer garden with my friends on weekend.
Everyone, let’s spend good days next week with good care!
